Septic Tank Care - The Do’s and Don’ts

An open septic tank with a cleaning pipe inserted

If you’ve just bought a property with a septic tank, you may feel overwhelmed with what to do and what not to do. From septic tank cleaning to septic tank drainage, there’s lots to know about in order to prevent blockages or leaks. However, there’s no need to worry as we’ve put together this blog to help explain the dos and don’ts so you can feel assured you are doing the right thing.

The don’ts of septic tank care

It is in your best interests to treat your septic tank properly. You can help extend the lifespan of your septic tank, save money and protect the environment. Here are the things you should never do in order to properly care for your septic tank.

  • Don’t put fats, oils or grease down the drain. These things will soon clog up your septic tank leading to problems further down the line or even expensive cleaning or repairs. Fats, oils and grease might seem like a lubricant when they are hot, but once they hit room temperature, they will solidify and sit in your pipes or clog up your septic tank.

  • Don’t flush anything that isn’t biodegradable. Another important thing to do is never flush anything that isn’t biodegradable. This includes wet wipes, cotton buds, sanitary products, and nappies.

  • Don’t use harsh cleaning chemicals. Unlike normal sewage systems, you cannot use harmful chemicals when you have a septic tank. This includes bleach, disinfectants and drain cleaners. These things will kill the helpful bacteria in your septic tank that is required to treat the sewage.

  • Avoid putting coffee grinds or food scraps down the drain. These things are bad for both your septic tank system and the environment as they can clog pipes and release nitrates and phosphates.

The do’s of septic tank care

Here is what you should be doing when you have a septic tank.

  • Use septic tank-safe products sparingly. You can find cleaning products that are designed to safely use with septic tanks. However, you should use them sparingly.

  • Conserve water.  Too much water in your septic tank can affect its efficiency so opt for eco-cycles on your appliances and choose a shower over a bath.

  • Use septic tank services. Septic tank cleaning and maintenance should be done regularly to ensure the efficiency and health of your septic tank.
